    Key Highlights

    • Legal action in Pennsylvania targets DraftKings, FanDuel, and the NFL over microbetting platform design allegedly fostering addiction
    • Legal filing draws parallels between rapid-fire microbets and slot machine mechanics, describing platforms as “addiction-amplifying machines”
    • Plaintiffs report devastating losses after switching to mobile betting platforms
    • Genius Sports generated $126.1 million from live microbetting commissions in 2025
    • Wave of state-level restrictions on microbetting and proposition wagers gaining momentum

Legal proceedings initiated in Pennsylvania challenge major sports betting platforms, alleging DraftKings, FanDuel, the NFL, and Genius Sports deliberately engineered their online betting systems to promote compulsive gambling through microbetting features.

The Public Health Advocacy Institute brought forward the legal action representing Christopher Sage and Terry Thompson as plaintiffs. Both individuals assert they suffered debilitating gambling problems following their adoption of mobile betting applications.

According to the legal filing, microbetting technology enables bettors to place wagers on virtually unlimited in-game moments. Each individual play, throw, basket, or passing second transforms into another betting occasion with constantly updating probability calculations.

The complaint characterizes these platforms as a “relentless, always-on addiction-amplifying machine.” The filing contends operators have exploited mobile infrastructure and AI capabilities to create systems that promote nonstop wagering behavior.

Parallels Drawn Between Microbets and Casino Slot Games

The legal document establishes explicit connections between microbetting operations and traditional slot machine gaming. Attorneys argue the rapid pace and constant availability of live proposition wagers replicate the high-speed architecture of slot games, long recognized as particularly habit-forming gambling mechanisms.

Individual live proposition bets resolve within minutes or mere moments, the filing notes. This framework establishes what the lawsuit characterizes as a system offering “no off-ramps or pauses in the action.”

Both plaintiffs indicate they engaged with sports viewing and occasional wagering without incident for approximately two decades. Their gambling patterns shifted dramatically following their transition to smartphone-based betting platforms.

“Within just a few years… Plaintiffs nearly lost everything—their money, their houses, their business, their families,” the filing states.

The legal action further charges betting companies with deploying VIP reward structures to maintain user engagement. Allegations include claims that company representatives stayed in regular communication with customers, providing travel packages, merchandise, and promotional benefits to encourage continued play.

The filing additionally implicates the NFL and Genius Sports for providing instantaneous game data enabling microbetting functionality. The lawsuit contends these betting products cannot exist without access to such real-time information feeds.

Genius Sports collected $126.1 million in fees from live microbetting operations during 2025. This figure constituted approximately 19% of the organization’s annual revenue stream.

The NFL maintains ownership shares in Genius Sports. Both DraftKings and FanDuel have publicly acknowledged that live betting represents approximately half of all wagering volume on their respective platforms.

    Growing State-Level Movement Against Microbetting

The Pennsylvania lawsuit presents numerous allegations under state law, including defective product design, inadequate consumer warnings, negligent practices, deceptive business conduct, and deliberate infliction of psychological harm. Those bringing the case request monetary compensation, jury consideration, and court-ordered remedies.

This marks another chapter in PHAI’s ongoing legal efforts against betting industry operators. The organization initiated class-action proceedings in Massachusetts during 2023 questioning DraftKings’ deposit incentive structures. A judicial ruling last month permitted that matter to advance toward class certification, evidence gathering, and courtroom proceedings.

During 2025, PHAI launched comparable legal action in Pennsylvania against Caesars Palace Online Casino regarding promotional bonus methods.

This lawsuit emerges amid heightened state-level examination of microbetting practices. New Jersey legislative bodies moved forward this week with proposed microbetting prohibition measures. New York legislators have put forth legislation seeking complete elimination of live wagering options.

Massachusetts, Colorado, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Minnesota are actively evaluating potential prohibitions on specific proposition bet categories. Ohio, Maryland, and Vermont have already implemented restrictions on proposition wagers involving collegiate athletes.
