Macau’s 2026 Tourism Surge: 10 Million Visitors Arrive Nearly Two Weeks Early

    Key Highlights

    • The SAR achieved 10 million visitor arrivals by March 21, 2026, outpacing 2025’s timeline by 12 days.
    • Average daily arrivals have climbed to 126,000, representing a 14% year-over-year increase.
    • Approximately 75% of visitors originate from mainland China, with Hong Kong contributing 15%.
    • Border Gate processes more than 44% of entries, while the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge handles nearly 20%.
    • The territory achieved an unprecedented 40.06 million arrivals in 2025, exceeding its 2019 pre-pandemic record.

Macau achieved its 10 million visitor threshold for 2026 on March 21, reaching this benchmark nearly two weeks ahead of the previous year’s schedule. The Public Security Police Force announced these statistics on Saturday morning.

This accelerated timeline follows an exceptional 2025, during which Macau registered 40.06 million total arrivals. This figure surpassed the earlier benchmark of 39.4 million visitors recorded in 2019 by 1.6%.

Through March 2026, the territory has maintained daily visitor counts averaging around 126,000. This marks a substantial 14% increase when compared to the equivalent period in 2025.

These statistics demonstrate sustained strength in Macau’s tourism sector following the pandemic disruption. The destination continues attracting visitors for gaming entertainment, retail experiences, and brief getaways.

Mainland China remains the primary visitor source. Arrivals from across the border constitute roughly 75% of total traffic into Macau.

Hong Kong ranks as the second-largest feeder market, representing 15% of visitors. Taiwan contributes 2.5%, while international markets account for the remaining 6.6%.

Entry Point Distribution Reveals Clear Preferences

Checkpoint statistics reveal distinct patterns in visitor entry methods. Border Gate stands as the busiest crossing facility, managing over 44% of total arrivals.

The Macau Port facility on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge ranks second, processing nearly 20% of entries. Hengqin checkpoint accounts for 16%.

These statistics underscore the significance of land-based entry points. The bridge infrastructure has particularly streamlined access for Hong Kong residents and travelers from throughout the Pearl River Delta area.

The predominance of mainland Chinese visitors continues defining Macau’s tourism landscape. With three-quarters of arrivals originating from the mainland, any fluctuations in Chinese travel behavior would significantly impact the territory’s performance.

Current Trajectory Points Toward Another Banner Year

Meanwhile, increased traffic from Hong Kong and international origins has diversified the visitor profile. The overall expansion rate indicates widespread demand rather than isolated spikes.

Achieving the 10 million visitor mark by mid-March positions Macau favorably for the remainder of 2026. Maintaining present daily averages would place the territory on course to surpass last year’s annual figure.

Macau’s attractiveness as a tourism hub has demonstrated resilience throughout the recovery phase. The blend of casino entertainment, shopping opportunities, and convenient access to major southern China population centers continues generating strong visitation.

The Public Security Police Force monitors these metrics as part of border control functions. Saturday’s release encompassed both arrival volumes and checkpoint utilization patterns.

The 14% elevation in daily averages versus last year provides the most compelling evidence of intensifying growth. This trajectory suggests the 2025 record may be short-lived.

As recorded on March 21, 2026, Macau’s daily visitor average reached 126,000, with Border Gate handling the highest proportion of crossings at more than 44%.
