    Key Points

    • A Buenos Aires judge has mandated a complete nationwide shutdown of Polymarket due to unlicensed gambling operations
    • Apple and Google must delist the Polymarket application from their digital storefronts throughout Argentina
    • Regulatory investigation revealed Polymarket permitted instant account registration without identity validation or age verification protocols
    • Portuguese and Dutch authorities have similarly penalised Polymarket over compliance violations in recent months
    • Brazilian gambling authorities are actively examining prediction market platforms following Kalshi’s market entry

A judicial order from a Buenos Aires courtroom has mandated the complete blocking of Polymarket throughout Argentina. The cryptocurrency-powered prediction market platform stands accused of conducting gambling operations without securing the necessary regulatory permits.

The judicial decree additionally compels both Google and Apple to withdraw the Polymarket mobile application from their respective digital marketplaces across Argentine territory.

Legal proceedings commenced following formal allegations submitted by the Buenos Aires City Lottery. The government-run lottery organization identified that Polymarket was facilitating wagering activities within national borders without proper governmental authorization.

The Buenos Aires Specialised Gambling Prosecutor’s Office assumed jurisdiction over the investigation. Prosecutors characterized Polymarket as an “underground digital wagering operation” functioning beyond the boundaries of legal oversight.

Regulatory examination uncovered that Polymarket’s platform enabled users to establish accounts instantaneously with no requirements for confirming user identities or verifying minimum age requirements. The service maintains no recognized permits with the Association of State Lotteries of Argentina.

These investigative conclusions prompted judicial intervention. The precedent established by this decision may facilitate additional regulatory enforcement measures throughout the nation.

Polymarket representatives have remained silent and offered no official statement regarding the legal action.

European Regulators Intensify Scrutiny of Crypto Wagering Platforms

Argentina represents merely one jurisdiction among several targeting Polymarket. European regulatory bodies have implemented comparable enforcement measures throughout recent months.

Portuguese gaming authorities officially determined Polymarket lacks authorization to provide betting services within their jurisdiction. National legislation explicitly forbids wagering on political outcomes, encompassing both domestic and foreign electoral contests.

Portuguese regulatory officials, operating through the Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos, documented a dramatic €103 million increase in election-related betting activity conducted via the platform. The agency subsequently issued an official cease-and-desist order requiring Polymarket to terminate all operations.

The Netherlands gambling authority Kansspelautoriteit similarly imposed punitive measures against Polymarket. Dutch regulators determined the platform had been conducting operations throughout the Netherlands without obtaining mandatory gambling authorization.

These coordinated enforcement actions demonstrate an emerging international pattern of regulatory pressure directed toward cryptocurrency-based prediction market platforms.

Latin American Oversight Bodies Monitor Market Developments

Developments within Argentina emerge as Brazil simultaneously heightens its vigilance over prediction market platforms.

Kalshi, a competing prediction market service, recently established operations in Brazil. This represented the organization’s inaugural international expansion beyond United States borders.

The Brazilian gaming oversight agency, formally titled the Secretariat of Prizes and Bets, issued commentary following Kalshi’s market entry. Officials confirmed prediction market platforms constitute part of ongoing internal regulatory evaluation processes.

“It should be emphasized that currently no Brazilian enterprises possess formal authorization from the SPA to conduct operations within this market segment,” regulators stated. Foundational research examining prediction market frameworks remains actively underway throughout Brazil.

The Brazilian regulatory body’s public remarks indicate the nation may implement enforcement measures paralleling Argentina’s approach should platforms persist in operating absent local licensing compliance.

Polymarket has encountered a rapid succession of regulatory obstacles spanning multiple geographic regions within a condensed timeframe. The platform received enforcement notifications from Portuguese authorities, Dutch regulators, and most recently Argentine judicial officials across recent months.
