Apple Opens App Store Gates for Licensed Betting Platforms in Brazil

    Key Highlights

    • App Store policy revision on May 8 enables distribution of licensed fixed-odds betting applications in Brazil
    • Operators must possess valid certification from Brazil’s Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA-MF)
    • Fresh app submissions with complete license documentation required via App Store Connect
    • Mandatory 18+ age classification applies to all gambling applications
    • Policy adjustment reflects Brazil’s evolving regulatory approach to sports betting and iGaming

Apple has revised its App Store policies to welcome licensed fixed-odds betting platforms in Brazil. The regulatory change became effective Thursday, May 8.

The updated guidelines restrict eligibility to operators possessing active licensing from the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting of the Ministry of Finance (SPA-MF). Without this governmental authorization, betting platforms cannot distribute applications through Apple’s ecosystem.

This policy adjustment arrives as Brazil expands its regulated gambling sector. Legislative developments throughout the nation have enabled certified sports betting and iGaming providers to establish operations legally.

Historically, Apple enforced more stringent limitations on gambling apps in Brazil than in comparable jurisdictions. This restrictive approach forced numerous betting enterprises to depend on mobile browser platforms and progressive web applications instead of creating dedicated iOS software.

    Requirements for App Submission

Certified operators seeking app distribution must satisfy multiple conditions throughout the App Review procedure. Apple mandates developers create an entirely fresh app version instead of merely modifying existing applications.

The technology giant clarifies that altering details solely within the App Review Information section fails to constitute an acceptable update. Complete new submissions are mandatory.

Operators must attach their SPA-MF licensing credentials alongside App Review commentary. Apple suggests utilizing a dedicated Notes section within App Store Connect for licensing information.

Documentation verifying the operator’s authorization to provide betting services in Brazil must be uploaded as file attachments. Every gambling-oriented application will automatically receive an 18+ age classification when developers indicate the gambling category within the age rating assessment.

    Regulatory Compliance and User Protection

Apple indicates that all submitted applications undergo evaluation for adherence to domestic legislation concerning consumer protection and gambling hazards. The corporation has encouraged betting operators to collaborate with legal advisors to ensure their applications satisfy the regulatory structure.

The policy transformation brings Brazil into closer alignment with European markets, where authorized betting operators have long distributed applications through official app marketplaces.

Mobile technology represents the predominant method Brazilian users access betting services. Smartphone usage significantly exceeds personal computer utilization for wagering activities.

Native application availability could transform operator strategies regarding customer acquisition and engagement. Native applications provide operators access to push notification systems and additional communication capabilities that mobile websites cannot completely duplicate.

Prior to this modification, the absence of native app distribution constrained how licensed operators could engage Brazilian consumers. Browser-based solutions, though operational, lacked equivalent integration with device functionality.

The revision also establishes a more distinct separation between regulated enterprises and unlicensed operators. Having applications accessible through official channels provides users with methods to confirm that a betting platform holds appropriate licensing.

Industry authorities and regulatory bodies have advocated for collaboration between technology platforms like Apple and domestic betting regulators. This policy revision represents one outcome of those conversations.

Apple’s determination specifically addresses fixed-odds betting applications. The company has not revealed modifications for alternative gambling application categories currently.

Brazil’s regulated betting industry has experienced expansion since governmental authorities commenced issuing operator licenses. The App Store policy revision marks the most recent milestone in that progression, with Apple now processing new application submissions from licensed operators through App Store Connect beginning May 8.
