    TLDR

    • A 3-2 victory for Alianza FC over San Miguelito has become the subject of a match-fixing investigation in Panamanian football
    • José Calderón, San Miguelito’s goalkeeper, netted a questionable own goal during the match’s closing stages
    • Fellow player Gustavo Herrera released a video directly accusing Calderón of deliberately fixing the match
    • The goalkeeper has issued a statement rejecting the accusations and maintaining the own goal was accidental
    • Panama’s football league has launched an official inquiry while emphasizing its strict stance against corruption

A match-fixing scandal has emerged in Panamanian football following a controversial fixture between San Miguelito and Alianza FC. While Alianza FC secured a 3-2 victory, the circumstances surrounding the final goal have sparked serious questions about the game’s integrity.

The controversy centers on an own goal by José Calderón, San Miguelito’s goalkeeper, scored during the match’s final moments. The nature of this goal immediately attracted skepticism from spectators, analysts, and fellow players.

Observers noted that the sequence of events leading to the goal appeared highly irregular. The fact that it occurred in such a critical moment of a tightly contested match intensified scrutiny throughout Panama’s football community.

Player Publicly Names Teammate in Match-Fixing Allegation

The controversy intensified dramatically when Gustavo Herrera, playing alongside Calderón, broke ranks to make a public accusation. Rather than keeping concerns within team channels, Herrera chose to speak out openly about his suspicions.

In a video statement, Herrera explicitly identified his goalkeeper as someone involved in fixing matches. “Fixers, leave football,” Herrera declared in his message.

His statement continued with sharp criticism: “the love for football is carried in the heart, but many have lost it. I am speaking by name: José Calderón is a match-fixer, and he is not the only one.”

Herrera expressed concern about the impact on aspiring footballers. He highlighted that Calderón is a veteran professional who previously earned caps playing for Panama’s national team.

“Aren’t you ashamed? You’re doing it openly now,” Herrera challenged. He emphasized that countless players dedicate themselves to advancing their careers and fulfilling their aspirations, making such alleged corruption particularly destructive.

Such a direct public accusation from a fellow squad member is highly unusual in professional football. The statement immediately elevated the incident to a national controversy.

League Launches Probe as Goalkeeper Rejects Accusations

Calderón issued a formal response addressing the allegations. While apologizing for the mistake, he strongly denied any deliberate wrongdoing or involvement in corrupt activity.

“I express my sincere apologies and fully assume responsibility for what was strictly a sporting and unintentional error,” Calderón stated.

He continued by saying he “categorically rejects any attempt to link this action to conduct contrary to the integrity of the sport.”

The Liga Panameña de Fútbol took swift action in addressing the allegations. League administrators announced the opening of an official investigation into both the match itself and the surrounding accusations.

League representatives affirmed their “zero tolerance” approach to match manipulation. They declared that such behavior “undermines the credibility, fairness, and fundamental values of football.”

Authorities indicated they are coordinating with the league’s Integrity Office and Disciplinary Commission throughout the investigation. Officials stressed that Panama confronts football integrity issues “with determination and concrete actions.”

The inquiry remains active. As of May 5, 2026, no official penalties or formal charges have been publicly disclosed.
