    Key Highlights

    • Starting May 4, Google Ads permits gambling advertisements in Alberta exclusively for operators holding licences from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission.
    • Campaign types are currently restricted to brand awareness initiatives, with mandatory geo-targeting to Alberta residents only.
    • The province will officially open its regulated online gambling marketplace on July 13, becoming Canada’s second province to permit private operators following Ontario.
    • Operators must obtain RG Check accreditation demonstrating responsible gambling practices before launching services.
    • Leading gambling companies including BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, and Rush Street Interactive have announced intentions to launch in Alberta this summer.

The search engine giant has modified its advertising guidelines to permit gambling-related promotions within Alberta, Canada. This policy revision became active on May 4, 2026.

According to the updated regulations, exclusively those operators holding proper licensing from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission qualify to purchase gambling advertisements via Google Ads. This policy adjustment arrives in advance of Alberta’s scheduled opening of its regulated online gambling marketplace on July 13.

Currently, advertising partners can only execute brand awareness initiatives. More restrictive parameters continue to govern additional gambling promotion categories until provincial frameworks broaden.

Every campaign requires geo-restriction to Alberta’s boundaries. Businesses seeking to advertise prior to the official wagering commencement date must submit documentation of their licence application to meet Google’s certification standards.

    Policy Scope and Details

The revised advertising framework encompasses lotteries, sports wagering, internet-based casinos, and fantasy sports competitions where provincial licensing exists. Lottery products require government operation or federal licensing.

Additional gambling offerings need approval from the Alberta commission and must maintain targeting exclusively within provincial borders. After formal wagering commences on July 13, the conventional certification procedures will govern all advertising partners.

Alberta announced last month that its regulated online gambling industry would commence operations on that date. This development terminates the province’s extended monopoly operated through Play Alberta.

Through this transformation, Alberta establishes itself as Canada’s second province permitting private operators to function lawfully under provincial licensing. Ontario pioneered this approach.

Provincial authorities have stated their objective involves redirecting billions of dollars in current activity from offshore platforms. They aim to channel this engagement into a carefully supervised system.

    Player Protection Standards

Consumer safety forms the foundation of this new regulatory structure. Each sportsbook and casino platform must secure RG Check accreditation from the Responsible Gambling Council prior to launching operations.

The accreditation evaluation examines deposit limitations, timeout features, self-exclusion mechanisms, and employee education. It additionally scrutinizes marketing practices to confirm platforms avoid targeting minors or at-risk populations.

Alberta has implemented measures to incorporate lessons from Ontario’s initial deployment of its online gambling marketplace. The province has already prohibited athletes from participating in gambling advertisements.

Public promotions that might encourage excessive wagering have likewise faced restrictions. Licensed operators must prominently feature the AGLC logo throughout their marketing efforts.

This logo serves to inform consumers they’re engaging with a regulated service provider. These safeguards establish elevated consumer protection benchmarks from inception.

The forthcoming marketplace debut has attracted attention from numerous prominent gambling industry organizations. BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, and Rush Street Interactive have all publicly confirmed strategies to launch in the Alberta marketplace this summer.
